Projects: upcoming, current and recent
April 3, 2008: Premiere of Concerto for Cello
and Orchestra by Paul Marleyn and the Thunder Bay Symphony
Orchestra under the direction of Geoffrey Moull. This 20 minute
work is in two movements: I, Intrados; II, Extrados and is dedicated to
the memory of my father who passed away in June 2007.
December (2007) to February, 2008: work is underway on a new piece for
wind ensemble. This piece, entitled Pluto's Moons, is being
composed with the help of students from the Vincent Massey Collegiate
Wind Ensemble. David and the Ensemble are working out many of the
preliminary ideas for this piece on a Facebook site called
"Pluto's
Moons." Pluto's Moons
is in three-movements: 1) Charon;
2) Nix; 3) Hydra, and is approximately 9
minutes in duration. It will be premiered at the
Rocky Mountain Band Festival in Banff, Alberta in April 2008.
June 11, 2007: Premiere of String
Quartet #2 on the Agassiz
Music Festival in Winnipeg. Work commissioned by Agassiz Music
with funding provided by the Manitoba Arts Council. Yehonatan
Berick & Kerry DuWors, violins; Jethro Marks, viola; Paul Marleyn,
cello.
April 17-20, 2007: SOCAN Composer Residency with the
Manitoba Chamber
Orchestra.
April 18, 2007: Premiere of Dwarf Planets by the Manitoba
Chamber
Orchestra and the Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra. This work
was part of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra's ongoing outreach and
education activity. The process involved young musicians in
the planning and creation of a new piece for the two orchestras.
Dwarf Planets was premiered in Winnipeg at Westminster United Church on
April 18, and toured to Gretna, Manitoba on April 20.
January 12, 2007: Premiere of After
Miguel de Fuenllana commissioned
by GroundSwell for Winnipeg-based guitarist, Ian Hodges. Other
performers include: Laurel Ridd, flute; Daniel Scholz, viola; Ben
Reimer, percussion. This work was recorded by CBC Radio and
broadcast on April 29 on the national program The Signal.
November 26, 2006: Premiere of Four Bagatelles commissioned by the
Manitoba Registered Music Teachers Association. This work was
composed for euphonium student Vanessa Nowostawski and was presented
on a special concert during Canada Music Week.
September 24, 2006: Premiere of The Rising Curve of Day for
mezzo-soprano
and orchestra. This work was commissioned by CBC radio as part of
a special birthday celebration of Canadian poet and visual artist, P.
K. Page. The Rising Curve of
Day was premiered by mezzo-soprano Rosemarie Vanderhooft and the
Victoria Symphony under the direction of Tania Miller. The
premiere was broadcast on CBC Radio's Symphony Hall (Oct. 1); In
Performance (Nov. 15) and Two New Hours (Nov. 19).
March 24, 2006: Premiere of a new Double Concerto for
Violin, Cello and 13 Strings commissioned by Brandon-based violin/cello
duo Kerry DuWors and Mark Rudoff. This work was premiered by the
Brandon Chamber Players.
March 18, 2006: David gave two composition
workshops with Suzuki students at the University of
Manitoba. The younger group of students (aged 4 to 5)
worked on narrative-based soundscape compositions using voice, body
sounds and Orff instruments. The older group (aged 6 to 12)
explored the raw materials of music, the nature of sound, control of
texture, and simple formal principles.
February 12, 2006: Premiere of Tranquility and Order
for SATB choir, viola and percussion on
the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's New Music Festival. This work, using
text by Winnipeg-based poet Ariel Gordon, was commissioned by CBC radio
to commemorate the 2004 Asian tsunami disaster. It was premiered
by the Winnipeg Singers, violist Daniel Scholz and percussionist Ben
Reimer. Yuri Klaz conducted the ensemble.
February 6-10, 2006: Short-term composer residency at
Memorial University, St. John's, Newfoundland. During this 5-day visit,
David worked with children of Larkhall Academy on creative music
projects, gave public lectures and masterclasses, and took part in the
annual NewFound Music Festival. Two of David's works were presented at
the Festival: Balance (2004) and citron aveugle....(2000).
This latter performance was a world premiere given by Timothy
Steeves.
October, 2005 to March, 2006: Eckhardt-Gramatté
winner's tour showcasing Montreal soprano, Layla Claire. David Scott's Disordered
Songs (2005) was included in each program twenty Canadian cities
coast to coast:
May, 2005: Premiere of Disordered Songs (2005)
for voice and piano at the 2005 Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition in
Brandon. The new work, which is a setting of text by Prince Edward
Island writer Steven Mayoff, was performed by numerous
semi-finalists and included in the winner’s tour of Canada during the
2005-06 season.
March-April, 2005: Touring of a school project with
members of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. The project takes students
through a whirlwind tour of musical style and prepares them for a stage
production of The Great Mozart Hunt, written and performed by
world-class bassoonist George Zukerman.
April, 2005: Performance of Balance (2004) by
Duo Concertante on a GroundSwell Concert in Winnipeg.
February, 2005: $25,000 Major Arts Award. This award
will allow David Scott to concentrate on a large-scale composition
project for a period of 10 months. The support of the Manitoba Arts
Council is much appreciated.
