February, 2005: Performance of Interlinear
(2003) on the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival. This
work will be recorded by CBC Radio for national broadcast and
distributed to the European Broadcasting Union for International radio
play. Interlinear was commissioned by Paul Marleyn for the Agassiz
Music Festival in 2003.
January, 2005: Premiere of Balance (2004) for
violin and piano at Memorial University in St. John’s. This work was
commissioned by the Newfoundland-based group Duo Concertante who will
include it on tours of California (March) and China (May).
August, 2004: Four premieres of short opera scenes at
the Tapestry NewOpera Works Composer/Librettist Workshop, Toronto. Over
the course of ten days David worked with four writers--Anna Chatterton,
Joseph Maviglia, Steven Mayoff, and Douglas Rodger--to create scenes
which were performed, discussed and critiqued by Tapestry Artistic
Director Wayne Strongman and Dramaturge Michael Albano.
July, 2004: Premiere of Psalm 70: Make Haste (2002)
for SATB choir and organ. Make Haste was performed by
Prairie Voices under the direction of Elroy Friesen. The organ soloist
was Lottie Enns-Braun. Make Haste was commissioned by the Royal
Canadian College of Organists for the 2004 National Convention.
April, 2004: Premiere of Recipe for Tea (2003)
for soprano and chamber ensemble. This work was commissioned by soprano
Valdine Anderson for a GroundSwell concert which also featured: Laurel
Ridd, flute; Daniel Scholz, viola; Judy Siebert, piano; Rob Gardner,
percussion; and Michelle Mourre, conductor. Recipe for Tea was recorded
by CBC Radio and was broadcast nationally. Text is by the west-coast
poet Jim Wong-Chu.
February, 2004: Reading session by the Winnipeg Symphony
Orchestra of a new orchestral work entitled Scylla (2002).
Michelle Mourre was the conductor. This work was composed with
assistance from a Manitoba Arts Council Composer Development Grant.
June, 2003: Premiere of Interlinear (2003) on
the Agassiz Music Festival at Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, University
of Winnipeg. Performers were: Sara Bitloch, violin; Aaron Au, viola;
Paul Marleyn, cello.
April, 2003: Premiere of Brink: concerto for
viola and chamber orchestra (2002) by violist Daniel Scholz and the
Manitoba Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Roy Goodman. Brink
was recorded for national broadcast on CBC Radio.
January, 2003: Performance of String Figures (2001)
by the Cassatt String Quartet on the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New
Music Festival. This work was recorded by CBC Radio for national
broadcast and distributed to the European Broadcasting Union for
International radio play.
April, 2002: Premiere of Gang Related (2001)
on the GroundSwell new music series. The work was part of a show
entitled Street Scenes by Co-Artistic Director Therese Costes. Gang
Related was performed in a warehouse space for an audience that was
transported through Winnipeg’s downtown on city buses.
January, 2001: Premiere of String Figures
(2000) by the Molinari String Quartet. This work was commissioned by
GroundSwell with funds from the Canada Council for the Arts. String
Figures was also played in Montreal by the Molinari String Quartet in
April, 2001.
January, 2000: Performance of Traffic (1994)
by the Hammerhead Consort on the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New
Music Festival.
May, 1999: Various performances of Gravity and
Light (1993) by the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra during their tour
of Italy. Simon Streatfeild was the conductor.
January, 1998: Performance of Gravity and Light
(1993) on the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival.
Rosemary Thompson was the conductor.
April, 1997: Premiere of Test Patterns (1997)
by Ensemble Mondetta at Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, Winnipeg.
Funding for this work was provided by Canada’s Year of Asia Pacific.
April, 1996: Premiere of The Material Plane
(1996) by the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra. This work was commissioned
by the Saskatoon Symphony with funds provided by the Saskatchewan Arts
Board. Dennis Simons was the conductor.
February, 1996: Premiere of Circular Ruins
(1995) by the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. This was a joint commission
from the CBC and the Saskatchewan Arts Board. Simon Streatfeild was the
conductor.
November, 1996: Premiere of Love Songs and
Interludes (1994) by Thira on the GroundSwell concert series.
Work was commissioned with funds from the Saskatchewan Arts Board. Text
for Love Songs and Interludes is by Michael Ondaatje from his
volume of poetry entitled, Secular Love (1984).
December, 1994: Premiere of Haydn Fragments
(1994) by David Stewart, violin and Delores Keahey, fortepiano on the
Ivory Echoes Concert Series, University of Manitoba, School of Music.
May, 1994: Premiere of Traffic (1994) by the
Hammerhead Consort at Convocation Hall, University of Alberta. Traffic
was commissioned by the Hammerhead Consort with funds provided by the
Canada Council for the Arts. It is available on the Arktos label.
